Barely two weeks after the release of the news letter that contained the exciting information about the imminent Ghana DJ Awards program, lots of controversies have started ensuing. The awards festival which is said to roll off soon this year has sparked off speculations of rivalry and arguments between some known DJ’s in the country’s capital.
Amidst the hue and cry, one of Africa’s finest and Ghana’s celebrated DJ Black, in an interview, has stated that, though normal, he does not see the need for such rivalry. He was of the view that, “people have their favourites and know their worth. Your hard work will single you out”.
Sarkodie’s Disk Jockey, Dj Mensa had this to say: “It certainly would be in the good interest of the Ghanaian entertainment industry because such a program will go a long way to put Ghanaian Dj’s on their toes, which means consumers of music will have better quality on the radio, at night clubs and at parties. Y.FM and ETV’s DJ Flexy said the work of a DJ goes beyond sitting behind the console and changing tracks but rather involved hours of hard core research which informs the worth of any good DJ. He added that he thought it was a good initiative to award DJ’s, explaining that, “it will motivate them to work harder to entertain the people of Ghana”.
Tension is also already at a high pitch on Facebook and Twitter social networks with debates by sections of the public as to who deserves what although the organizers, Merqury Republic haven’t officially launched the event.
Although a lot of Ghanaian entertainment critics, including Halifax of News One, have embraced the concept of the awards as a good initiative, Pajohn Dadson faults some organisers of some awards programs in Ghana for having little or no background in the organisation of the awards programs and therefore challenges the organizers of the DJ awards to “go beyond the ordinary to bring excellence to the great idea they have conceived”.
The Annual Ghana DJ Awards”, - the first of its kind to be organized in the country- will be held this year with a sole aim of promoting and awarding the best achieving Ghanaian Radio, Night Club and “recognized” mobile Disk Jockeys. The Awards ceremony is yet to be launched.
