In an insightful and revealing interview on Multi TV’s PM EXPRESS Personality Profile programme, Confidence Haugen, one of Ghana’s representatives in the Big Brother Amplified game has described herself as the “black sheep” of her family.
Confidence who was evicted from the game some two weeks ago explained to show host Nii Arday Clegg that she saw herself as the black sheep of the family because she always tried to break the rules set by her parents.
“I’m the black sheep of the family. I’m the one that tries to break all the rules, all the rules that are not supposed to be broken [I try]. I push all the buttons.”
But living with parents she described as strict, it was certain Confidence would not always get the opportunity to bend the rules in her favour. She recounted an eventful day in her pre-teen days when she decided to play truant.
“My mum was a farmer at that time and if I remember well she used to wake up around 4 o’clock [to go to the farm]. One day, my mum went to the farm and came back around 8:30 or something like that and we were still [at] home [meanwhile] our school was just opposite the house.” “So my mum was like I can’t believe you people. All you have to do is get dressed and go to school. Ok, I’m taking you to school myself. So she took us to school and I knew my mum was going to get us spanked. So I took this t-shirt and then put it on my bum so that when they hit me it will sooth the strokes” but to Confidence's utter surprise and unknowing to her, her mother had already discovered her plan so at the school, after her mother had made the case for her to be whipped “in front of the whole school, she said teacher wait don’t beat her yet, she’s got something on her bum.”
The then 10-year old Confidence recalled telling her mother “mummy you can’t do that.” But whether her mother could or could not do that was irrelevant as the cane strokes descended on her bum nonetheless. That day marked a turning point in her life, at least as far as school was concerned because “since then I was never late for school”, she confessed.
Confidence who owns the Aphrodisiac night club also used the interview to clear the air about some lingering questions about her night club.
First point to be cleared was why she chose the name APHRODISIAC?
“Aphrodisiac because [at] the time I was coming up with the club, I was into Greek mythology; you know the god Zeus, Odysseus, Troy and stuff like that. One of the goddess was Aphrodite [the goddess of love, fertility and sexuality – she is such a cool goddess] and I tried to find a word closer to that because I couldn’t call it [the club] Aphrodite and Aphrodisiac did sound quite good for the kind of club I wanted to have.”
But having found the perfect name for the club, Confidence said there was another hurdle she had to clear to enable her christen her club with the perfect name – that had to do with registering the club with a name that had a sexual connotation even though for Confidence “it’s such a cool name”.
“I couldn’t register it legally in Ghana because of the name. They said it was a ‘naughty’ word so I had to register it as a subsidiary of another business.”
She was also quick to add that the club bore no semblance with its connotated meaning. “It has nothing to do with sex. It had everything to do with what it represented and what I wanted it to represent in night life. I wanted you to come to Aphro and stay till God knows how long and you don’t know about it, you’re not looking at your time. I try to make it a very stress-free zone” she said of the club.
Asked if she got the approval of her strict parents to enter the Big Brother game, Confidence explained that mother and father have never watched the show hence they could probably not understand it, she nonetheless received massive endorsement and support from her sibling.
“I come from a very compact family” she said of her family which consists of her biological sister, Irene and her step siblings.
She has been locked up in a room obviously for more than a week, of course with other people but if Confidence Haugen was to be locked up in a room for a week and asked to choose an activity which is something she will have to do all week, she would prefer to be locked up in a club somewhere in Las Vegas.
She told Nii Arday, “put me in Vegas in a club and you can leave me there forever. Put me in a good club somewhere in Vegas with fantastic people and you will never hear of me again.”
Apparently Vegas is on her list of must visit places on earth. She explained “it’s one of the places I dream of going to and I don’t wanna go and visit for a week or two. I want to go live there for like three months or so and understand how that city breathes, how it works.”
