Ghanaian Comedian Waris has been on the receiving end of criticism and backlash from feminist groups and social media users, following a joke he made on Twitter about Sarkodie’s 2-year old daughter which many have described as pedophilic.
The comedian tweeted out “Sarkodie’s daughter is becoming Ripe. Very soon we ppl (people) will tear and eat”.
While a few people on Twitter thought it was just an innocent joke, Feminist activist and co-host of GhOne’s “Celebrity Fanzone” Akosua Hanson has called out the comedian for what she described as an insensitive joke.
According to her, jokes of this nature are part of a much bigger issue; the systematic thoughts that people have about women and young girls.
“It starts from childhood” she said. “(Men) see a little girl developing breasts and think she is ripe….and it is a common thing, you have uncles that say “that’s my wife” to girls who are under the age of 10. So, it’s not just a joke gone bad, but a systematic thinking and cultural problem we have.”
Comedian Waris has apologized to Sarkodie’s family and the public for the insensitive joke, explaining that his intention was not to sexual the underage girl.
