Asogli puts on show its rich cultural heritage

Ho, Sep 26, GNA - Culture was at its best on Sunday at Ho when ''gurus'' of the Ewe culture took turns to educate and entertain natives and visitors about the tradition of the Asogli people at the on- going Annual Asogli Yam Festival.

The programme, which was named "Adanukope" - culture village, saw many individuals and groups vexed in the tradition of the Asoglis revive their culture.

They told " Ananse" stories (folktales), puzzles and riddles of rich cultural value.

Some 10 cultural troops including the Volta Dancers of the National Commission on Culture, the Gumbe, Israel Maweta and the Bamboo music from Ho-Hliha all performed under the chairmanship of Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Anthony Nyalemegbe, Public Relations Officer for the Asogli State Council, said the programme was to "revive the old traditions and cultures of the forefathers".

He said story telling among the Asoglis was a harvest time activity normally done by heads of families after supper that taught young ones how to live good lives.

"Ewe proverbs are used to teach children of future events and how they should be in readiness for the future but due to globalisation, some are getting lost," Mr Nyalemegbe said.

He expressed the hope that the re-introduction of the programme would help children in their cultural studies at school.

Other programmes detailed for the week include; cooking competition, Volta Expo, kpodada, clean up, mini-durbar, football match, grand durbar, state dance and a non-denominational thanksgiving service on Sunday.
