Art Exhibition At Novotel Hotel

An exhibition of paintings inspired by African masks, textiles and grains of sand by Kate Abena Badoe and Ofei Dako will open at the Novotel Hotel in Accra on Thursday July 7, 2005.

The exhibition, which is being sponsored by the Novotel Hotel, will showcase recent works by both artists, who have in recent years created a unique style of their own.

Trained at the College of Art, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Badoe's themes are based on imagery from traditional African Art.

Indeed, she transforms her ink drawings with geometric figures, shapes and lines resulting in artworks that are rich in detail and aesthetics but still reflect simplicity and elegance.

Currently based in Cookeville (Tennesee, USA), Badoe has over the years managed to transform traditional African Art from relics of traditional life to contemporary settings while presenting a philosophical mindset that underlines traditional African culture.

Badoe, whose works are in both private and public collections, has exhibited her works in Canada, United Kingdom, Ghana and the United States. Ofei Dako, who was trained at the Ghanatta College of Art in Accra, has managed to carve a niche for himself with extremely evocating artworks.

A former lecturer at the Ghanatta College of Art, Dako is the sculptor of a fourteen-feet high monument at the Presbyterian Training College (Akropong) in the Eastern Region.

Currently the vice president of the Ghana Association of Visual Artists, Dako's recent works comprise a dramatic combination of sand, glue and colours, which he turns into outstanding images and designs on the canvas.

He has in recent times participated in a number of workshops and seminars organised by some Art institutions in Accra that attracted a number of art lovers and enthusiasts in Accra.
