Another Nescafe African Revelation Year, Traffic Has Been Discovered

After 4 months of intense competition, Traffic was chosen as the winner of the 2nd annual Nescafe African Revelation.

On November 26th, the forecourt of the Ohene Gyan Sports Stadium was filled with thousands in attendance and millions of television viewers watching the competition on Metro TV, the unsigned Kumasi based trio fulfilled the dream of a lifetime when they beat the other 12 contestants by 93.71 points to win the day.

Naughty Lords Clan (NLC) came second with 90.4 points and Nsuo had no option but to claim the third position with 86.65.

Live on Metro TV, the show was hosted by raglife artiste, Batman who once tried his hands at emceeing again after a successful one at the Pan African event.

The contestants had to go through 3 rounds of rapping or singing, in round one, the groups had to compose an accapella song for Nescafe.

They then had to do another accapella of their own choice in the second round and in the final round they have to do a recorded song or rap over a beat.

In the first and second round, it was a head to head affair.

I defined round three as ‘Survival of the Fittest’ where all the 13 contestants from the six zones had to fit in the three positions in the finals.

3 Unit’s song was like noise to the ears of the audience, African drum’s song was nice but they used their feminine features to amuse the audience and judges as their mics did not seem to help them.

Agoro dressed in the national wear of the Scots had a nice tune which was appealing to the crowd. Nsuo decided to do a nice Nigerian song which had a nice instrumentation.

Key holders, Kla-la, Mmrantipa, 12 0’clock, Ranking Family and Nkwantanan did not seem to impress the judges made up of Bright (Buk Bak fame), Mike Cooke (CEO of Vibe FM), Isaac Abeido (CEO of Goodies Foundation & Producer of VIP and Tic Tac), Tucci Goka, Panji Anorff (Pidgen Music), Nii Mingle (STB McCann) and Amandzeba.

Kente dressed in an African masquerade cloth had a nice chorus which the crowd was in tune with. NLC came up next also receiving cheers from the crowd for a good love song they sang.

Traffic was able to win the support of their fans and the crowd by singing about road accidents and also advised drivers about causes of road accidents. I hope Obour adds them to his National Road Safety campaign.

When it was all over, Traffic fulfilled the dream of a lifetime when they shared the same stage with Praye and made their television performance debut on Metro TV.

Millions of television viewers who also had DSTV around the world were introduced to Traffic, new winners of NAR 2005.

Traffic walked away with $5,000, a Hifi sound system and a customized Nescafe guitar each, a hamper of Nescafe products each, their maiden album will be recorded and massively promoted by Nescafe plus also a potential of becoming the hottest names in the Ghanaian music industry.

The other contestants also took away one guitar each and a hamper of Nestle products from Nestle Ghana.

The show wouldn’t have been a good a show without some musical performances of VIP who dished out two songs from their old album – ‘Besin’ and ‘Ahomka Womu’ plus the latest one ‘Pussy Cat’.

Others performances came from Christiana Love, Kwabena Kwabena, Okomfoo Kwaadee, Ofori Amponsah, Kwaw Kese and was finally rounded up by the host, Batman.

A Documentary of how Praye made the journey from the auditioning, crowning of NAR and Pan African champions to being nominees at the KORA All Africa Music Awards was shown to the crowd and invited guest before they performed songs from their albums and the latest song from the compilation from Appietus.

After performing, Nestle presented Praye an all expense air-ticket to South Africa for KORA Awards and $1000 spending money to the members of the group.

Truly another Nescafe African Revelation year has come and another great unsigned group has been discovered! We wish Traffic the best in their music life and hope they follow the footsteps of their predecessors, Praye.
