Vitesse Arnhem retained their Eredivisie status when taking a point from their trip to VVV Venlo on Monday.
The Gelredome side went into the game holding a five-point lead over Sparta Rotterdam with two games remaining in the play-offs.
Sparta could have taken the group down to the wire with a win, but they were held at home by Helmond Sport and this allowed Vitesse to take top spot.
Matthew Amoah was the man who took the glory for Vitesse, as he netted their goal on 29 minutes following good approach play from Aleksandar Rankovic.
Venlo could have been forgiven for not putting it all in, but they battled to the end and were rewarded with a leveller from Ken Leemans in the last ten minutes.
Rick van den Bergh scored twice for Sparta, but it was in vain as Helmond Sport held them to a 2-2 draw. Rob Oomens and Danny van Bakel were the men on target for Helmond.
