Accused in robbery case involving ex-policeman acquitted

Cape Coast, July 30, GNA- A Cape Coast High Court on Tuesday acquitted and discharged Kwasi Fosu, one of the five men standing trial at the court with ex-Constable Armah Schandorf for conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery for lack of evidence.

The seven-member jury led by Mr Maxwell Acquah, returned a verdict of not guilty because the prosecution could not establish a 'prima facie' case against him.

The judge, Justice Nana Gyamera Tawiah, had earlier directed the jury not to find the accused guilty as no evidence had been adduced to connect him with the crime.

Fosu, who was the fifth accused person in the case, had together with Schandorf, Samuel Ghartey, Emmanuel Oduro and Daniel Owusu, pleaded not guilty to the charges, while Kwadwo Addai, the fourth accused, has pleaded guilty with explanation.

Schandorf, Ghartey, Oduro and Owusu who the court said have a case to answer will open their defence on Wednesday while it has deferred sentence on Addai.

Fosu appeared stunned by his sudden freedom, could not make his way out of the courtroom and had to be escorted out by one of the prison officers.
