The Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL), has invested more than $140 million in its operations at Damang, near Tarkwa.
This was disclosed by the Managing Director of the company, Mr David Hatch, when he led newsmen to inspect an ?800 million 10 km feeder road from Huni-Valley to Damang. He said, in order to facilitate easier access to the mine area, AGL has constructed new roads, upgraded existing ones and built bridges at a cost of $2 million.
He said the benefit of the road development has led to the opening up of the northern route to Twifo Praso through to Accra. Mr Hatch said, the company's commitment to responsible corporate citizenship requires that effective and cordial community relations are developed and maintained.
"We believe the company has made substantial progress in these areas through its consultative relationship with the local communities and several social investment projects implemented within the last three years", he added.
The Human Resources Manager of the company, Dr Tony Aubynn, said so far over $3.5 million had been spent to relocate and resettle people affected by the mines whiles $1.2 million had been paid as compensation for landed properties. He said, nearly ?9 billion had also been spent to expand and install electricity to four communities in the area, namely Damang, Huni-Valley, Bompieso and Amoanda.
Dr Aubynn said as a key economic partner in the Western Region and the nation as a whole, AGL is committed to its principles of ensuring that the company remains profitable and efficient.
