Some Chiefs and Queen mothers in the Atebubu–Amantin area of the Brong Ahafo region have shown their preparedness to work with everybody after that despicable incident that led to the traditional leaders banning the National Democratic Congress’ Member of Parliament for the area from all social programmes in the run-up to the December 7, election.

According to the leaders, even though they played a role in showing the ex- MP, Sanja Nanja the political exit it does not mean they harbour hatred for people of Zongo descent.

“We are not against Muslims we have lived peacefully with our Muslims brother and sisters over the years in Atebubu,” they posited.

Background

In the last election, the NDC MP who was once the District Chief Executive for the area had a brush with the Queen mother of Atebubu Traditional Area where she sued the MP for defamation.

The suit was filed at the Wenchi High Court on Thursday April, 2016.

A press release signed by Kofi Amofa, Secretary to the Queen Mother said she took the decision because the abusive words used on her by the MP “has provoked public disaffection for her and has also exposed her to public ridicule and contempt.”

The queen mother is praying the court to award damages against the defendant in the sum of GHC500,000.

An order of perpetual injunction is also being sought to restrain the defendant from writing, printing and publishing further words and defamatory statements against her.

Sanja Nanja banned

The traditional authority at Atebubu banned Sanja Nanja from engaging in any social or political activity in the area for raining insults on the Queen-mother during an interview with a local radio station.

The traditional authority explained that they took the action to punish the MP to serve as a deterrent to others in the area.

This was the incident that created a frosty relationship between the then ruling NDC MP and the traditional leaders in the area.

But a Queen at Atebubu gave hints of working with a Muslim DCE in an interaction on strict conditions of anonymity.

She explained that they have worked the NPP secretary who is vying for the position of DCE in the area and they know his worth and how he has treated traditional leaders in all his interaction with the leaders over the years.
When questioned they have any favourite among the tall list of individuals jostling for the position of DCE , she said if the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)wants to retain the seat it suffered to wrestle from the main opposition NDC.

Then the DCE position must be handed over to Alhaji Sheriff because he cut across all the political divides in the area.

Some members of Atebubu NPP Zongo Women's for Development Association have also appealed to President Akufo Addo and his Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumiah to appoint the Constituency secretary, Sharif Mohammed as the next DCE for Atebubu/Amantin District.

Hajia Safia Ali, Secretary of the Association and joined by Maame Mohammed Ammen made it clear that is only Sharif Muhammed, who is currently the Constituency secretary for the party can help president Akufo Addo to achieve all his vision for the district and also help their Member of Parliament on the ticket of the NPP to retain his seat in 2020.

They finally described Sharif Muhammed as someone who had worked so hard for the party's victory in 2016 election and he does not discriminate among people no matter their, political background.

They claimed the president must appoint a person who they think can bring more people to the party when appointed as DCE for the district.
