Obuasi SHTS Saga: Adom-Otchere makes shocking claims about headmaster, NDC

Host of Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has alleged that embattled former Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has threatened the national executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over his political ambitions.

According to Adom-Otchere, Abdulai has allegedly asked the NDC leadership to appoint him as the first vice-chairman of the Juaben Constituency because the party directed him to withdraw from the chairmanship race.

Adom-Otchere said the alleged threat raised questions about why the NDC leadership appeared reluctant to take a firm position on Abdulai’s political ambitions.

“He's told the NDC that, ‘Now that you don't want me to contest, I am telling you that if I don't contest, you have to appoint me as a first vice chairman of the constituency’. That's a threat that he has issued, and I hear the national [executives] say that they have heard,” he alleged on his show.

The television host further suggested that the party’s leadership might be under pressure from Abdulai because of information he could disclose about the NDC’s political activities in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 general election.

He claimed that Abdulai had allegedly warned the party that he would speak about its activities in the region if the leadership took action against him based on allegations circulating on social media.

“He's telling them that, look, ‘NDC, if you don't know and you follow NPP social media and you punish me, whatever we did in Ashanti region for John Mahama to win, I will say it’. This is what we are hearing. This is what we are hearing,” he stated.

Adom-Otchere, however, acknowledged that he could not independently confirm whether the alleged threat had been made.

“Is it true? I don't know. Could it be true? Maybe. Is it possible? Yes, it is possible. Otherwise, how do you explain it?” he questioned.

He also questioned why NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, whom he described as a principled and outspoken politician, would appear to accommodate Abdulai.

Adom-Otchere argued that the party’s handling of the matter was surprising, given Kwetey’s public position that Ghana’s national interest should come before party loyalty.

“Fifi Kwetey is forthright and cannot be bought. He's not one of those politicians who can be bought. I can say that for him. He's not my friend, but Fifi Kwetey is one of those who cannot be bought. Everybody knows that. He's strong and forthright.

“For Fifi Kwetey to kowtow to this man, it means the guy is very powerful, and he's holding something. The other day I heard Fifi Kwetey ranting and raving on some platform that Ghana first before NDC for him. That he is Ghana first. Laudable. But what about this one? Fifi Kwetey, the forthright NDC general secretary, had to kowtow to this man who is a secretary in one constituency out of 276,” he alleged.

Adom-Otchere made the allegations while discussing the controversy surrounding Abdulai, who has been accused of sexual misconduct involving 19 female students.

He has since been granted self-reconnaissance bail after he was invited by the police for investigations.
