Former Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has outlined the assessment process that guides decisions on whether incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) deserve another opportunity to contest on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ticket.
Speaking on Oyerepa TV, he explained that parliamentary candidates are not automatically allowed to contest again at the end of their terms without consideration of their performance and commitment to parliamentary duties.
“People should understand that when the duration for Parliament ends, it is not all play all; that’s anyone who wants to contest for the position should come,” he said.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said MPs are observed from the moment they enter Parliament, with orientation, committee assignments, and performance assessments helping determine how effectively they carry out their responsibilities.
He explained that MPs who fail to perform are corrected and given directives, while their willingness to improve is also monitored.
According to him, assessments may recommend that an MP not contest again if the person is considered unproductive or not contributing adequately to parliamentary work.
