Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has explained why he wants to remain in Parliament if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) returns to power in 2029.

Afenyo-Markin said his experience as Majority Leader during the previous NPP administration taught him the importance of giving the then Minority, who are now in the Majority, the space to raise concerns and contribute to parliamentary business.

“If we come into office in 2029, I would want to remain in Parliament,” he said during a visit to the Christian Council on October 5, 2026.

According to him, he was willing to listen to the then Minority when he was Majority Leader and often yielded to their concerns.

“When I was a majority leader, I heard them [minority]. They will tell you that a lot of times I yielded to them,” he stated.
He cited the vetting of Supreme Court nominees as an example of how he responded to concerns raised by the then Minority.

He said when the Minority argued that 10 days’ notice for the nominees was not enough and requested two weeks, he agreed to their demand.

“Even when the Supreme Court nominees were there before the cameras, we went backstage, discussed, and we asked the nominees to go back, and we re-advertised,” he recalled.

Afenyo-Markin, however, said the same approach was not followed when the political situation changed.

“But when it got to them, just two days. The third day, they say they have to be vetted, forgetting about their own principles,” he said.

He said his experience on both sides of the House would make him willing to listen to the Minority when the NPP returns to power.

“So, at least I have the benefit of being a majority leader, and I can tell you that I would always be ready to listen to the minority when that time comes and I know that time will come soon,” he added.
