Majority Leader James Agalga has rejected the Minority’s call for Parliament to investigate the government’s handling of the drug menace.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Agalga said a parliamentary probe would amount to another investigation while law enforcement agencies are already investigating drug-related cases.

He said several suspects have been arrested, with some already taken to court and remanded.

“I don't know what the Minority seeks to achieve, but I have demonstrated in very clear terms through this statement how government has intervened in this quest to nip the drug menace in the bud.

“If they want us to have a parliamentary probe at a time when the law enforcement agencies themselves are seriously investigating and arresting suspects, some of whom have already been arraigned before courts and remanded, I seriously have my doubts as to the real intent of that particular request for recall, what it is meant to achieve, because we must understand that Parliament is not an arm of government that engages in criminal investigations,” he explained.

According to him, Parliament’s main role is to oversee the work of government and not conduct criminal investigations.

He explained that Parliament can invite law enforcement agencies to answer questions after they have completed their investigations, especially if there are concerns about how the cases were handled.

“Normally what happens is that we exercise oversight. When the criminal investigation agencies have done their work, brought matters to conclusion, and Parliament thinks or believes that maybe the investigations were not properly carried out, at that stage, Parliament can invite the criminal investigation agencies to appear before its relevant committees and respond to queries,” he stated.

He cautioned that running separate investigations into the same cases at the same time could lead to different findings.

“But whilst they are still at it, you cannot have multiple investigations irrespective of the same matter happening concurrently. When you do that, you could have an absurd situation where multiple investigations may lead to different conclusions. When you have that happening, you have chaos on your hands to manage,” he cautioned.

He therefore described the Minority’s request for Parliament to be recalled for the probe as premature, arguing that several issues cited by the Minority had already been addressed.

“That is why I want to believe that the request by the Minority for Mr Speaker to recall is premature. Most of the things they have capitalised to justify the recall are matters that have been dealt with,” he noted.
