The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has launched an aggressive grassroots campaign in the Effutu Constituency, with National Youth Working Committee Chairman Okai Mintah.

He has declared a relentless push to unseat incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmaker and Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, in the 2028 general elections.

Addressing branch youth organisers and grassroots activists in Winneba as part of his ongoing engagement with the party’s youth structures, Mintah said the Effutu parliamentary seat must be a major target for the NDC as the party prepares for the next general elections.

He was emphatic that the NDC could not afford to leave the seat uncontested in practical terms, stressing the need for sustained organisation, voter engagement and a disciplined grassroots campaign aimed at producing an NDC Member of Parliament for Effutu.

“Afenyo-Markin out, NDC MP in,” Mintah declared, drawing an enthusiastic response from party supporters. Mintah criticised the MP’s record, stating that despite holding the high-profile position of Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin has achieved nothing meaningful for his constituents in Parliament.

Instead, Mintah charged that the lawmaker has resorted to empty propaganda and unjustified attacks against GoldBod and its CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, to mask his failure to deliver real development.

He said the objective was not merely to mount a campaign during the election season but to establish a permanent grassroots mobilisation structure capable of keeping the party connected to voters throughout the political cycle.

According to him, the NDC must pay particular attention to constituencies where improved organisation, effective communication and sustained grassroots engagement could translate into electoral gains.

“We will not leave our victory to chance. We will organise at the branch level, build the capacity of our young people, and work relentlessly until every vote that belongs to the NDC is mobilised,” he said.

Mintah described the youth as central to the NDC’s strategy to strengthen its parliamentary representation in 2028, urging branch youth organisers to stay active in their communities and maintain close contact with party supporters and voters.

He said the party’s renewed grassroots approach would involve identifying local challenges, communicating the NDC’s policies and achievements effectively, expanding its volunteer network, and ensuring young people are given meaningful responsibilities in the mobilisation process.

The Effutu Constituency, whose capital is Winneba, has remained a significant political battleground in the Central Region, with Afenyo-Markin having represented the constituency in Parliament for several terms. His long-standing presence and influence have made the seat one of the constituencies the NDC would need a well-coordinated campaign to capture.

Mintah, however, expressed confidence that with unity, discipline and sustained grassroots mobilisation, the NDC could make a decisive breakthrough in Effutu in 2028.

He urged party members not to be intimidated by the NPP’s organisational strength in the constituency, insisting that victory would depend on the ability of the NDC to work consistently at the branch and polling-station levels.

He further called on young party activists to take ownership of the mobilisation process and position themselves as the frontline organisers of the NDC’s 2028 parliamentary campaign.

“The work starts now. We are not waiting for 2028 before we organise. By the time the election comes, the structures must already be ready, the people must already be engaged, and the message of the NDC must already be firmly established in every community,” he said.

The Winneba engagement forms part of Mintah’s broader effort to engage branch youth organisers and grassroots activists, strengthen the party’s youth structures and build an election-ready organisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He maintained that the NDC’s ambition to expand its parliamentary majority would require deliberate efforts in both traditional strongholds and constituencies considered competitive, adding that Effutu must be among the seats targeted for a change in representation in 2028.
