Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr, has described Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s remarks about possible future onerous bail conditions for Sammy Gyamfi as mere political talk.

Speaking on the August 22, 2026 edition of TV3’s The Key Points programme, as sighted by GhanaWeb on X, Mike Oquaye Jnr noted that Afenyo-Markin’s remarks were not unusual, stressing that political parties often make provocative statements against their opponents when in opposition.

He explained that Afenyo-Markin’s comments about Sammy Gyamfi potentially facing stringent bail conditions in the future were political in nature and should be understood within the context of partisan exchanges rather than as a new development.

“Maybe some of the rest were tongue-in-cheek. I have heard in some places where some people were making jokes that, as for Sammy Gyamfi, his bail conditions are going to be very scary. Those are just political talks. Why do you behave as if there is no political talk in this country?” he quizzed.

“We were in this country when Fiifi Kwetey said Kufuor had taken all Ghana’s gold reserves to his house, and when he was questioned, he said it was political talk. So, don’t take these things too seriously,” he added.

'He's an extortionist!' - Sammy Gyamfi dares Afenyo-Markin

The remarks by the Minority Leader came amid a heated exchange over an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report indicating that the Bank of Ghana recorded losses of approximately US$1.7 billion (about GH¢22 billion) under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP) in 2025.

Afenyo-Markin had warned that GoldBod officials could face “scary” or onerous bail conditions if the NPP returns to power, linking the warning to accountability concerns over the reported losses.

Meanwhile, Sammy Gyamfi has firmly rejected claims that GoldBod itself recorded losses, citing the Auditor-General’s audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2025, which show an operational surplus of GH¢907 million and an overall surplus of more than GH¢5.4 billion.

He has maintained that GoldBod acted primarily as a buying agent and that the IMF report attributes the losses to the Bank of Ghana, not GoldBod. Gyamfi previously dismissed Afenyo-Markin’s bail-related comments as “comic relief”, insisting that he is serving the nation in good conscience.

During the same discussion on GoldBod and Ghana’s economy, Oquaye Jnr also noted that losses had been incurred under the programme, regardless of which state institution’s balance sheet they appeared on.
