Reports indicate that former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP), Sarah Adwoa Safo, is preparing to make a return to the constituency’s political contest, with indications that she could seek the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidacy ahead of the next election.
Sources familiar with developments within the constituency say the former MP is positioning her comeback around the message, “Reclaim, Rebrand, and Recapture.”
The reported move would mark a significant attempt by Sarah Adwoa Safo to regain the seat she previously held after her defeat in the 2024 NPP parliamentary primaries.
She lost the party’s internal contest to Mike Ocquaye Jnr, who subsequently became the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the 2024 general election.
Her defeat in the primaries was largely linked to dissatisfaction among some party delegates over her prolonged absence from Parliament and what they considered a failure to adequately discharge her parliamentary responsibilities.
Mike Ocquaye Jnr, however, was unable to retain the seat for the NPP in the 2024 general election, suffering a heavy defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Elikplim Akurugu.
The outcome effectively handed the Dome-Kwabenya constituency to the NDC, ending the NPP’s hold on the seat and setting the stage for a potentially competitive battle in the party’s next parliamentary selection.
Sources say Sarah Adwoa Safo is now seeking to reconnect with party grassroots and rebuild support within the constituency as part of efforts to make a political comeback.
The reported “Reclaim, Rebrand, and Recapture” strategy is expected to focus on restoring her relationship with delegates, reshaping her political image and positioning herself as a strong candidate capable of winning back the constituency for the NPP.
Her possible return could also trigger a fresh contest within the NPP, particularly as other aspirants may be considering their chances of securing the party’s parliamentary ticket.
Sarah Adwoa Safo, a former Deputy Majority Leader and former Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, represented Dome-Kwabenya in Parliament for several years before losing the NPP primary in 2024.
However, there has been no formal communication from the former MP confirming her intention to contest the seat again as of the time of filing this report.
Any decision by Sarah Adwoa Safo to officially enter the race is therefore expected to clarify the shape of the NPP’s parliamentary contest in Dome-Kwabenya and could make the constituency one of the closely watched battlegrounds in the party’s next internal elections.
