The Vice Chairman of the National Youth Working Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr Kweku Asiedu Nketiah Jr, has opened up about the challenges that come with being the son of the NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

According to him, in a video sighted by GhanaWeb, on August 10, 2026, bearing the name of a well-known politician can come with advantages but it can also attract enemies and lead to unfair judgment.

Dr Asiedu Nketiah Jr explained that his father’s reputation can sometimes open doors for him because of the work the veteran politician has done over the years.

“There’s a good part, and there’s a bad part. You just introduce yourself somewhere as Asiedu Nketiah’s son, and some doors are open because of the hard work the old man has done,” he said.

However, he said one of the major disadvantages is that people sometimes develop negative feelings towards him based on their experiences with his father.

He said some people can treat him as an enemy simply because of what they believe his father has done to them.

“… there are some negatives. It's like someone just hears of you, and then you become the person's enemy. Some are like, ‘this is what your father did against me’, then you attract enemies,” he shared.

Dr Asiedu Nketiah Jr said this means children of politicians can end up inheriting both the friends and enemies of their parents.

“So, you inherit your father's friends, and then you inherit your father's enemies,” he explained.

He also complained about the assumption that the children of politicians automatically want to pursue politics.

According to him, having a politician as a father does not determine what career a child must choose.

“Then people also seem to think that the moment you are the son of a politician, you are a politician but not all children of footballers are footballers,” he stated.

He cited Ghanaian rapper Manifest, whose father is a lawyer and former politician Tsatsu Tsikata, as an example of a child who chose a different career path.

“So, I can be a son of a politician, but I can be like Manifest. You know Manifest's father is Tsatsu Tsikata, right?” he cited.

He further explained that the actions of children of politicians are often judged through the lens of their parents.

He said they can be praised for something they achieved on their own, but have it attributed to their parents, while their mistakes can also be blamed on their parents.

“And you being a politician's son, when you are walking, you're always walking on shells because anything you do, if it's good, you had it because of your father. If it's bad, you are doing it because of your father,” he added.

He stressed that nobody gets to choose their parents and, therefore, children should not be defined by the actions or reputation of their fathers.

“But nobody chooses who their father is before coming to this world, so we try our best not to excite ourselves with the positives that come, and then not to also feel so downcast with the negatives,” he stressed.

“Anyone anywhere can just go on social media or meet you and be insulting your father. What do you do? You can't control what the person is doing. You can only control how you react to it,” he said.

Dr Asiedu Nketiah Jr said he chooses to remain calm whether people speak positively or negatively about his father.

He added that people should not assume that their opinions about his father automatically reflect who he is as an individual.

“So if you meet me and excuse my words, you say my father is crazy, I smile. If you meet me and say, hey your father, I like him, I smile because at the end of the day, we are trying our best to be role models.

“But irrespective of what we do, we are human just like you and the fact that someone has said something to you about my father does not mean that is how I am, whether good or bad,” he stated.
