The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended its Ablekuma West Constituency executive elections indefinitely following disputes over the credibility of the constituency's electoral register.

The elections, originally scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, were halted after a number of petitions were lodged with the party's Elections Committee of the National Council, alleging widespread irregularities in the register used for the internal polls.

The committee heard the petitions on Monday, July 20, 2026. During the proceedings, concerns were reportedly raised over several inconsistencies, including the alleged removal of the constituency secretary's name from the register despite the fact that he was officially known to be running unopposed for the position.

Although the Elections Committee has not yet announced its final determination on the matter, the party has put the constituency executive elections on hold indefinitely.

According to a JoyNews report published on July 28, 2026, a new date for the polls is yet to be announced.

The latest development stems from earlier complaints by a group of dissatisfied party members and Polling Station Executives, who petitioned the NPP's General Secretary over what they described as serious anomalies in the compilation of the constituency's electoral register.

According to the petitioners, one of the petitions sought to invalidate both the disputed register and the Electoral Area elections conducted with it. A separate petition, filed through legal counsel, requested remedies for members they claimed had been unlawfully removed from the register and stripped of positions they had legitimately won.

The aggrieved members alleged that several individuals who had been duly elected, acclaimed, and sworn into office were removed from the register without their knowledge and replaced by persons who neither contested the elections nor, in some cases, submitted nomination forms.

They also claimed that although the Electoral Area elections were initially suspended because of concerns about the register, the exercise later proceeded despite appeals from the Constituency Chairman for the process to remain on hold until the register had been corrected.

Despite the controversy, the petitioners say they remain committed to resolving the matter through the party's internal dispute resolution mechanisms. They have expressed confidence that the National Executive Committee will take appropriate action to safeguard the credibility, transparency and fairness of the NPP's internal electoral process.
