A member of the New Patriotic Party in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency has filed a suit at the High Court of Justice over alleged irregularities in the preparation of the party’s polling station executive album.

The plaintiff, Adu Mensah, a Polling Station Coordinator for the Dome Electoral Area in the Afigya Sekyere East Constituency, is seeking an interlocutory injunction to restrain party officials from conducting data entry and validation of the polling station executive album pending the final determination of the case.

The suit, filed at the Land and Human Rights Division of the High Court in Kumasi, names Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, as the first defendant.

Others cited in the suit are Dr Samuel Afriyie, Ibrahim Mohammed, Ernest Ofori Frimpong-Manso and Bernard Annor.

According to the statement of claim, the plaintiff alleged that the constituency executives and election committee had agreed by consensus to allow individuals who had worked for the party at various polling stations to contest unopposed and subsequently be affirmed into office.

The plaintiff further contended that under the party’s guidelines, nomination forms issued through the office of the General Secretary were supposed to be handed over to the Constituency Chairman for distribution to aspirants and subsequent submission to the IT Officer for inclusion in the constituency album.

However, Adu Mensah alleged that the 2nd and 3rd defendants, together with other unnamed persons, “clandestinely and without the knowledge of relevant stakeholders” prepared an album that allegedly failed to comply with the laid down guidelines of the party.

He further claimed that the album contained names of persons who were not qualified to participate or vote in the elections.

In an affidavit supporting the motion, the plaintiff accused the defendants of bypassing the Constituency Chairman and the IT Officer and using what he described as “dubious means” to create a separate album.

The plaintiff argued that the actions of the defendants were calculated to deny legitimate stakeholders the opportunity to participate in the constituency and regional elections.

Adu Mensah is therefore asking the court to declare the album preparation process void, compel the defendants to comply with the guidelines of the New Patriotic Party, and order the preparation of a new album that would include what he described as the appropriate persons.

The motion for interlocutory injunction was filed by counsel for the plaintiff, Kwame Bempong Ampomah of Excellence Law Consult in Kumasi.

The defendants are expected to respond to the claims after being served with the writ of summons.
