Director of Communication for the United Party, Solomon Owusu, has said he believes there will eventually be a by-election in the Asante Akim North constituency following the arrest of its Member of Parliament in connection with an extradition case.
Speaking on the issue on Joy Prime on May 16, 2026, Owusu said the United States would not spend resources to extradite a person unless a serious matter was under investigation.

“Forget about that innocent business. You think America will spend money to extradite you from Amsterdam to the United States? It will cost them money to buy a ticket and go and pick somebody from Amsterdam to the United States for the fun of it?” he questioned.
Owusu also criticised the lifestyles of some public figures, noting that young people are often misled by the outward signs of wealth, without knowing the source.
“The sort of lifestyles that people are living, and they are putting unnecessary pressure on the young ones, sometimes I don't envy them, as no business will lead to that conclusion… So we know it in our societies, but we eulogise them,” he stated.
According to him, the situation should serve as a lesson for politicians and the youth. He said the incident presents an opportunity for the country to clean up its systems and encourage integrity in public office.
“And that's why I'm saying that it's not a big deal, but it's an opportunity to clean the system. Let the right ones get to Parliament,” he said.
Owusu further claimed that the MP had previously faced issues in the United Kingdom linked to the same matter before returning to Ghana.
“You know, somewhere, like a part of last year or so, it came out that he had been arrested in the UK in connection with the same situation. Is that not the case? He came back [to the country], he decided to go back, and this time around, it happened,” he added.
The United Party communicator maintained that he strongly believes the constituency will eventually go for a by-election.
“These ones we say to please family members, loved ones, but the reality is that in the future, there will be a by-election there [Asante Akim North]. I have no doubt in my mind,” he stressed.

He urged young people to focus on hard work and avoid activities that could destroy their future.
“Let's use it to advise ourselves and let the young ones also know that it's not all that glitters that is gold. Let's work out and then make sure that we do not get ourselves involved in some of these things,” he stated.
