The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has criticised some appointees of President John Dramani Mahama, accusing them of attempting to unseat him after his tenure expires.

Gbande, who also serves as Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency, stated that these appointees are frustrating the president’s administration and creating confusion within the government.

Speaking in an interview on Onua TV on May 11, 2026, he explained that the initiative has caused division in the party, as members have begun aligning themselves with various candidates seeking to contest.

“Those aiming to contest are the problem. Has President Mahama told anybody that he is coming to die?

“It is like having a chief sitting on the throne, and people are already campaigning to replace him. This is the highest form of disorder.

“For me, I will not support anybody. My national organizer and I have decided that whoever wins the primaries, we will make that person the president. What is going on is creating suspicion among us because everyone is aligning someone to one of these contestants,” he said.

President John Dramani Mahama’s tenure in office will expire in 2028. Meanwhile, some prominent figures within the ruling government have already emerged as potential flagbearers of the party after Mahama’s tenure, preparing to compete with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
