Former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, remains the favourite candidate to win the NPP presidential primaries in January next year, a survey by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana (KAS) has reported.
According to the survey released on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia records an overwhelming 69.7 lead over the other contenders.
KAS conducted two separate polls among the NPP delegates and the general Ghanaian populace (non-delegates), and in both, Bawumia emerged winner.
About the NPP delegates voting on January 31, 2026, Dr Bawumia had 67.8% favouring him, while his closest contender, Kennedy Agyapong, polled 21.3%, according to the survey.
Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 6.6%, and the remaining candidates, Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum and Kwabena Adjei Agyapon,g each had less than 5%.
With the general Ghanaian population, Dr Bawumia polled 50.,6% and Kennedy Agyapong polled 29,.8% while Dr. Bryan Acheampong garnered 8.7% and the rest of the candidates polled small single digits.
Dr Bawumia has consistently led independent surveys ahead of the NPP presidential election, placing him as the favourite to emerge as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 elections.
Demographics
The survey, according to Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana, included responses of over 5000 NPP delegates and more than 13000 citizens (non-delegates), which they said “reflects a highly inclusive and diverse national sample with strong representation across all age groups” with “core ages between 26–55, across urban, peri-urban, and rural areas (41% rural)”.
The demographics also included “different educational and employment backgrounds, religions (Christian 74%, Muslim 22%), and across all ethnic groups.
These demographics ensure that the results reflect the views of a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society.
