Nhyiaeso NDC members gives 14 days ultimatum for fresh elections

Kumasi, May 15, GNA - Members of the Nhyiaeso Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have given a 14-day ultimatum to the leadership of the party, to conduct fresh elections to elect new executive members for the area.

They warned of a massive demonstration in Kumasi if their demand was not heeded.

This was contained in a statement signed by 18 ward chairmen and secretaries of the constituency and issued in Kumasi. The members said the two weeks ultimatum was in support of a ruling by a Kumasi High Court for fresh elections. The statement said the ruling was given on December 14, 2009 by Mr Justice E. Gyiane who declared the Nhyiaeso constituency elections as unconstitutional and void.

"Copies of the judgment were sent to the national and regional offices of the party to remove the nullified executive committee and put in place the process for new elections as enshrined in Articles 16, 17, 19 and 20 of the NDC constitution," the statement said. "However, in spite of persistent petitions, the party leadership had refused to conduct re-elections and the executive committee members who have been restrained by the court's decision are still holding on to office."
