Press Release By The Obuasi Constituency Of NDC

The executive of the National Democratic Congress, Obuasi Constituency branch, wishes to congratulate its supporters and the Ghanaian voters in general for voting for Prof. John Evans Attah-Mills as the next president of Ghana. We also bring good tidings of the New Year, 2009, to everyone and pray that the will of God almighty and Allah would reign supreme in this country of ours.

As we go to Tain constituency today for the election that confirms the mandate of the good people of Ghana for the NDC Presidential candidate, it is just natural that by securing the majority of seats in the next parliament, and that eight out of ten regions voted for us, we are already in the celebration mood. We therefore wish to reiterate the call by our flagbearer and your new president-elect that we should be moderate in our celebrations.

Indeed, there have been some reports that some people have started vandalizing both private and public properties in the name of NDC victory. It is in the wake of these unfortunate reported incidents that we wish to appeal to our numerous supporters in Obuasi and elsewhere to be mindful of the fact that our ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ means bringing together everybody irrespective of party affiliation to correct all the wrongs of the eight year tenure of the Kufour led government. We must otherwise be friendly enough to win the hearts of the supporters on the other side, whose shoulders we also need on the wheel of development.

Again, we should not forget so soon that it is always the strategy of our opponents to scare Ghanaians that when the NDC comes to power, the country would see no peace. There are also evidence that plans were far advanced by our opponents to incriminate our leaders by all manner of evil deeds in other to arrest them, incarcerate them, paint the party black and scatter our front; except that the Lord intervened and the matter became public knowledge.

You are also very much aware of the Hit List which is another diabolic innovation from their camp. Today, only God knows what worst things they could do in the face of their imminent defeat. It is possible that other people with criminal intents would infiltrate our camp and cause damages to life and properties only to quickly rush to the press and announce that the NDC has committed these crimes.

We the executives of the NDC therefore wish to admonish our numerous supporters to be vigilant of any subtle attempt to be drawn into any unlawful act in the name of celebrating our victory. Our president-elect has said that ‘if it is something that depends on us, we should live at peace with all people.” If possible, let us invite them to join us as we celebrate.

For the victory we celebrate, there is one important element; the revealing to the whole world of our democratic credentials which was hitherto enveloped by the demonisation of the NPP party. Today, the virtues of our founder, His Excellency J.J. Rawlings, is being extolled the world over, whilst time and events as they unfold here in Ghana after the run-off have exposed the true colours of the NPP in line with their tradition. Here again, it is possible for them to smear us with some of their political dirt.

And as they are burnt on stealing the people’s verdict, they do not care the damage they do to the image of Ghana abroad. All of a sudden, they have forgotten about their ‘I Believe In Ghana’ slogan. They chase and beat the media who helped bring them to power in the year 2000 and 2004.

For us, we need to remain calm and peaceful even in the face of extreme provocations, bearing in mind the fact that a bruised animal would always behave wildly and fiercely. All the same, we should be bold to defend the course of freedom and of right and ask God to fill our hearts with true humility and make us cherish fearless honesty and to resist oppressors rule.

May the Good Lord and Allah bless you all.

Happy And Prosperous New Year.

Signed:

Daniel Forjoe Constituency Secretary:
