‘You’re a cheat, step down if you cannot rule the country’ - Obengkrom chief blasts Mahama

The Chief of Obengkrom, Nana Kassim Okyere Obeng, in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency of the Central Region, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over the recent reduction in cocoa prices, describing him as “a cheat” who has failed to fulfil his promises to cocoa farmers.

The outspoken chief made the remarks during a tour organised by the Minority in Parliament over the weekend to engage cocoa-growing communities on challenges facing cocoa farmers.

Addressing members of the Minority delegation and residents of Obengkrom near Asuansi, Nana Kassim Okyere Obeng expressed frustration over what he described as worsening conditions for cocoa farmers in the area.

“For us, the farmers, we have realised that President John Dramani Mahama is a cheat. We have seen that he is someone who does not fulfil his promises,” the chief stated.

“At this point, if he cannot continue ruling the country properly, then he should step down for someone else to take over,” he added.

The chief also took aim at the Member of Parliament for the area, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, accusing him of neglecting constituents after winning political office.

“Our MP, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, is also deceitful. Before he became an MP, we used to communicate frequently, but now when I send him messages, he does not even respond,” Nana Kassim Okyere Obeng alleged.

According to the chief, many cocoa farmers in the community are struggling due to the decline in cocoa prices, forcing several farmers to abandon cocoa farming for alternative crops such as palm nut.

“Today, many cocoa farmers are suffering because of the reduction in cocoa prices. A lot of farmers are cutting down their cocoa farms and turning to palm plantations because they can no longer survive,” he lamented.

The Minority’s tour forms part of ongoing engagements with cocoa-growing communities across the country over concerns about cocoa pricing, farmer welfare, and challenges within Ghana’s cocoa sector.
