Former Agona West NDC MP robbed

Agona-Swedru, April 5, GNA - Mr Samuel Oppong, former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Agona West was at the weekend attacked by two armed robbers at his residence at Agona Swedru who bolted away with two mobile phones, video deck and other personal effects He said the armed robbers, who were wearing masks broke into his residence during the night and asked him to surrender all his money on him to them.

Mr Oppong announced this when he interacted with the residents of Pipe Tank, a suburb of Agona Swedru on Sunday.

He said the robbers made away his the items without hurting him and his family during the attack on Friday night.

The former NDC MP advised the residents in the Agona district to reactivate their neighbourhood watchdog committees in support of the police to ward off the incidence of armed robbery and theft, which had emerged in the district capital of late.

Mr Douglas Kwesi Gyebi chairman of the Justice and Security Sub-committee of the Agona District Assembly told the GNA that report reaching the committee members indicate that within one week, more than ten stores in Swedru township had been burgled.

He said one night, thieves broke into offices of Internet Caf?, computer store, chainsaw spare parts stores and other hardware stores and made away computers and accessories worth million of cedis, adding that an amount of 11 million cedis was taken away from the chainsaw spare parts store.

Mr Gyebi, who is also an Assemblyman for Yaabem Electoral Area, noted that the situation was alarming and urged security agencies to be on their guard to protect life and property.

He appealed to the police personnel at the security checkpoints on the four routes in the district to search both private and commercial vehicles, plying the roads.

Mr Gyebi said the Justice and Security sub-committee members would recommend to the District Assembly to assist the police with vehicles from the Assembly to help them undertake day and night patrols, adding that it seems the police have relaxed because the incidence of armed robbery in the district had been reduced.

He called on the Agona District Police Command to liaise with the District Assembly in order to collectively fight the spate of the armed robbery and theft in the area to protect life and property.
