Bawumia running mate delay 'unnecessary waste of time' – Asah-Asante warns NPP

Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Asah-Asante says the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is wasting time with the selection of the running mate for 2024 flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawuamia.

This comes on the back of the many calls from groups within the NPP on the flagbearer to select their preferred candidate to partner with him for the 2024 election.

A group, Patriotic Movement for Bawumia, believes that Dr. Bawumia succumbing to these pressures would have negative consequences for the party’s chances in the upcoming presidential election.

Addressing a news conference on the development in Kumasi on Sunday 21st April 2024, Aggrey Fiifi, convenor of the group argued that previous instances of candidates being influenced by parochial party groups have resulted in electoral defeat and factionalism within the party.

Commenting on the development on Morning Starr with Francis Abban, the Political Science lecturer stated that the NPP has brought unnecessary pressure on itself.

“I think that the NPP is wasting its own time. Because you have elected your flagbearer and the running mate is taking them forever. These decisions are not taken in a day.

"You have done your research and spoken with key members of your party. You have also tried to push it to other political spaces within your party to receive their responses, so what are they waiting for?

“I think it’s an unnecessary waste of time. They should remember that time is not on their side in terms of how many months are left towards the election. You need to get the person right now to come and support the campaign,” Dr. Asah-Asante advised.

He continued: “The more you delay, the more pressure comes to bear on the situation unnecessarily. Because of this pressure they are going through it’s unnecessary pressure if you ask me. If you had come out that’s all it would have ended all the noise.”
