Special Prosecutor Bill: We’re vindicated – Minority

The withdrawal of the Special Prosecutor Bill from Parliament by the Government of Ghana clearly shows that the concerns raised by the Minority with the Bill are justified, a member of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has said.

The Minority had raised issues of constitutional breaches, stating that the Bill had not been gazetted when it was first laid on Tuesday, July 18.

Accordingly, the Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu on Wednesday July 26 announced the withdrawal.

Speaking in an interview with Class91.3FM’s parliamentary correspondent Ekow Annan on Wednesday July 26, Mr Ahiafor said: “As a matter of fact, the Minority has clearly been vindicated because when the Bill was introduced for the first time and before the bill was referred to the committee, we raised a constitutional issue.

“It was constitutionally imperative in Article 106 that before the introduction of the Bill it must be gazzetted 14 days prior to its introduction in parliament but that wasn’t done.”
