Men want to sleep with us before funding campaign – Asokwa MP

The Member of Parliament for the Asokwa constituency Patricia Appiagyei has lashed out at men seeking erotic favours from women before agreeing to support them.

According to the legislator, the practice is becoming alarming and does not augur well in encouraging more women into politics.

The former Kumasi mayor’s comments follow the New Patriotic Party’s affirmative action policy which has since been reversed. The National Council of the main opposition party in Ghana had to review its policy after party supporters kicked against the directive.

“We have gone through one contest or the other to really pass us to be MPs. We have been in conferences and workshops about this affirmative action issues and then the women will tell you, even when we want to source funds from a man, the man wants to sleep with you before he gives you that kind of fund. It’s not fair,” Madam Appiagyei told Kumasi-based Ultimate FM.

She said affirmative action is a “deliberate effort to include women in governance”, adding an affirmative action bill currently before the Attorney General will soon be passed into law.

Appiagyei was, however, optimistic she will retain her seat with or without any affirmative action because she is with her people and does what “needs to be done and also does not thrive on lies and propaganda.”
