The head coach of Ghana’s swimming team, Kojo Abbew Jackson has expressed satisfaction with the performance of his team in the opening day of the 7th Africa Cana Zone 2 Senior Swimming Championship.
The competition is underway at the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra and at the time of the mid-day break Ghana had already bagged four medals.
Nubia Adjei, Rebecca Asare, Zara Forson and Nicholas Yeboah were all medal winners as a young Ghanaian team had a spirited start to the competition.
Coach Jackson told GhanaWeb that he was impressed with the performance of his swimmers.
He said that the primary objective of the team is not necessarily to bag medals but to give the budding swimming talents an opportunity to compete with some of the best in the zone and also improve their respective times.
He intimated that the level of swimming exhibited on the opening day was impressive.
“I think the competition is great as they have been a lot of records broken. It’s very clear that Senegal came very prepared but I’m very excited that my young swimmers are also medaling. I’m excited because if you look at the age profile of the swimmers, I’m using swimmers who are barely coming out of their junior categories. In fact, most of the once who got medals are 16 going to 17 so I’m excited because it means there are awesome prospects for us”.
Zara Forson, one of Ghana’s medal winners reveled in her victory, adding that she worked hard for it.
“I have trained hard for it and that’s the exact result I expected. My time was okay because the main thing about swimming is that you have to do your best and know that you’ve done your best”, she said.
