CPP members urged to support Presidential candidate

Tamale, Sept. 28, GNA - Mr Albert Atutiga, former Northern Regional Chairman of the Convention People's Party (CPP), at the weekend appealed to members of the party to join hands with the flag-bearer of the party, Mr George Aggudey, to ensure victory in the 2004 elections.

"The successful end of the party's National Delegates' Congress in Accra barely a week ago is a clear manifestation that the party is poised to win power in the next election" Mr Atutiga told the GNA in an interview in Tamale.

He said there were so many meaningful and hard working members of the party, who could contribute their quota to defeat the NPP government, "with its economic hardships," adding that, a CPP government would eliminate all sources of suffering in the country to enhance living standards.

He called on members to discard the notion that, aligning with the NPP government would ensure more parliamentary seats for the party, saying, "We can win more seats and even power without aligning with NPP". Mr Atutiga reminded party members that the principles and motto of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, that made the CPP win power in 1957 was "self government now" and that if the party wanted only parliamentary seats it would not commit resources into organising the National Delegates Congress to elect new executives.

He claimed that people in the Northern sector had lost faith in the NPP government and that the CPP is the only alternative choice, saying, "there is now a strong regional executive put in place to ensure that the party wins power overwhelmingly".

He said, as an Acting Regional chairman and coordinator for the three Northern regions for two years, he worked tirelessly and united the party indicating that he would work harder than before so that he would reap "good fruits" at the end.
