Woman before court on provisional charge of murder

Elmina, July 22, GNA- A 36-year-old woman from Bronyibima near Elmina, who allegedly clubbed her six-year old son to death, was on Tuesday remanded in prison custody when she appeared before the district court at Elmina, on a provisional charge of murder. The plea of Atta, who is described by the police as mentally retarded, was not taken and she would be re-arraigned on Tuesday August 19.

The case for the prosecution was that Atta clubbed her six- year -old son Kwadwo Kwakye to death on July 19 at about 8pm, while the boy, was asleep. It said a report was made to the police who arrested Atta, while the child's body was sent to the Central Regional hospital for autopsy, and that the police was still investigating the case. The court, also remanded John Kobina, a 57-year-old fisherman from Elmina, in prison custody for assault. He pleaded not guilty and would be re-arraigned on July 29.

The prosecution told the court that Kobina and the complainant in the case, one Stephen Kobina Fynn, are members of the same family and that on June 26 this year, Mr. Fynn went to their family house to visit his aunt. It said Mr. Fynn's aunt complained to him that she had been assaulted by one Nana Banyin about two weeks earlier, and Kobina's sister who happened to over hear their conversation, picked a quarrel with Fynn. Kobina emerged at the scene, and without any provocation, rushed on Fynn and beat him up, resulting in a cut above his left eyebrow, and a report was made to the police.
