Businessman and maverick politician, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has commended Minister for Energy Boakye Agyarko and the economic management team of the government headed by vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for their efforts which have resulted in the drastic reduction in electricity tariffs for various category of consumers.
Kennedy Agyapong who is the Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region said the reduction is a step in the right direction saying Ghanaians ought to praise the government for it.
“Between 2014 and 2015 I was sending my electricity bills to Parliament and I complained about the high electricity bills and nobody was listening to me. I was paying millions of cedis as bills for my cold store,” he lamented.
Speaking on Oman FM’s Boiling Point, the Assin Central lawmaker revealed that he went to the Energy Minister and complained bitterly about the cost of electricity and asked him to ensure that something is done about it because it was killing businesses.
According to him, he is excited that “Boakye Agyarko listened to me and something has been done about it.”
He is convinced the tariffs reduction will stimulate job creation and reduce unemployment situation in the country.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) on Monday, March 5, 2018 announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for the various category of consumers.
The Commission approved 17.5% reduction for residential consumers while commercial consumers had 30% reduction and special load tariff consumers and mining companies having 25% and 10% reduction respectively.
