Tarkwa (W/R), Dec. 20, GNA - Gold Fields Ghana Limited (GFGL), a mining company, has donated GH¢100,000 cheque to help complete the construction of a geological laboratory at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkaw.
Presenting the cheque, Mr Peet Van Schalkwyck, General Manager of the company said Gold Fields had established a foundation to ensure that communities in which it operates reaped sustainable benefits through investment in socio-economic projects.
He said Gold Fields Ghana is currently the leading gold producer in Ghana and UMaT had contributed to this success by supplying competent skilled labour to the mine.
This he said called for support to the university to achieve its aim of becoming a centre of excellence not only in Ghana but in Africa. Mr Schalkwyck said in the past three years, the company had through the Foundation (The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation) assisted the university with over 250,000 dollars.
He said the funds went into various projects including the establishment of V-Sat Internet facility, acquisition of geotechnical equipment and had also instituted a bursary award for the best third year student in five selected areas of study at the university. Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Daniel Mireku Gyimah expressed his appreciation to GFGL for the donation.
