Sports Council supports measures to whip up interest in cricket

Cape Coast, Sept. 24, GNA - The Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Ghana Cricket Association, (GCA) Mr Kwame Asare has appealed to corporate bodies, philanthropists and individuals to contribute towards the promotion of cricket, beginning from the basic school level in the country.
Mr Asare, who is also Deputy Director at the Teacher Education Division of the Ghana Education Service, made the appeal when he opened a day's cricket 'coaching clinic' for physical education teachers from the Adisadel, Mfantsipim and St. Augustine's Senior High Schools and the University of Cape Coast as well as physical education instructors in the Central Region and officials of the National Sports Council (NSC). The clinic which was organised by the GCA and sponsored by the NSC was to re kindle interest in the sport and re-introduce it in the SSS. Mr Asare advised the participants who discussed topics including development of cricket skills, umpiring, rules, bowling, batting and field placing, to help sustain interest in the game in order to help develop the sport to an appreciable level.
Representatives of the Ghana Cricket team also gave the participants and students of the three schools, a demonstration of the rules and how the game is played. Members of the association later donated a set of cricket equipment comprising cricket balls, batting gloves and pads and wicket keeper pads to the three schools.
