Ghana to host North-West Africa Women's Rugby Tournament

Accra, June 2, GNA - Ghana will this weekend host seven other countries for the first ever North-West Africa Women's Rugby Tournament at the El Wak Stadium, Accra. The seven-aside tourney will see countries like, Togo, Tunisia, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Morocco and Egypt battling for honours during the two day event.

Briefing the media in Accra, Mrs Gifty Annan-Myers, Chairperson of the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA), said the participating countries have been grouped into two pools, with Ghana in pool A, alongside Tunisia, Cote D'Ivoire and Burkina Faso with Nigeria, Togo, Egypt and Morocco in pool B.

According to Mrs Annan-Myers, the participating teams are expected in the country by the close of Thursday and adequate preparations have been made to adequately host them.

She said Ghana is bent on popularizing the sport in the country hence the need to ensure a successful tourney. Mrs Annan-Myers noted that the GRA has received the necessary support from the International Rugby Board (IRB) and the National Sports Council (NSC), hence the huge amount of work done to ensure the successful organisation of the event.

Mrs Annan-Myers added that they also received some amount of support from Voltic Ghana Limited and called on other corporate bodies to support the Association in the organisation of the tourney. The GRA Chairperson said the tournament will also pave the way for further development of the sport in the country.

Mr Worlanyo Agra, acting Chief Executive of the National Sports Council (NSC) said his outfit was keen on giving equal attention to sports development in the country hence the decision to provide support to all Associations. 02 June 09
