Chinese government provides 1,000 boreholes to local communities

In accordance with the exchange letters signed on October 13th and November 16th, 2015 between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of Republic of Ghana, the Government of the People’s Republic of China agreed to assist Ghana to undertake the Project of 1000 Boreholes, the total cost of which is US$20 million.

Jiangxi Zhongmei Engineering Construction Co., Ltd is the contractor of this project. The construction of the project mentioned above was officially commenced on December 23rd, 2015 and completed on December 23rd, 2018 on schedule. Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources in the Republic of Ghana passed acceptance inspection on 31st December, 2018.

The 1000 Boreholes Project is to supply safe drinking water to rural communities and small villages in all the ten regions of Ghana, which will benefit at least a targeted 500,000 people. In accordance with the request of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the Chinese side constructed 1,029 boreholes totally, among which 52 were fitted with submersible (electricity) pumps, 976 were fitted with hand pumps and 1 solar-powered borehole at Asante Akyem North in Ashanti Region.

Safe drinking water is critical in reducing the outbreak of water related and water borne disease. The project will also directly benefit tens of thousands of women and children who used to trek a long way for clean water.
