President Akufo-Addo is optimistic that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) will seriously consider a reduction in electricity tariffs.

Speaking at the inauguration of the new board of the PURC, Nana Akufo-Addo charged the Commission to address challenges facing the power supply sector.

As a way of ensuring that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission operates diligently to address clients’ concerns and challenges facing the energy sector, the new regime has inaugurated a fresh governing body for the PURC.

While administering the induction, President Akufo-Addo promised there will be noninterference in the functions of the Commission from his administration.

Rather, he assured adequate investment in energy generation, reckoning that his government had over the last 10 months invested over GHC 4.7 billion in the sector towards addressing some challenges.

On the issue of electricity tariffs reduction, Nana Akufo-Addo charged the PURC to review taxes slapped on bills to ensure quick and effective payment by consumers.

Commission Chairman Michael Opam, in a brief remark, said his outfit's area of focus will be to consider the reduction of electricity tariffs and further review other activities of the commission to ensure that Ghana meets its targets in power supply and consumption.
