Adherence to quality & standards only way to compete internationally - Deputy Trade Minister

Carlos Ahenkorah Carlos Ahenkorah

The Deputy Minister of Trade, Carlos Ahenkorah says strict adherence to quality and standards is the only way that goods manufactured in the country can compete with other products on the international market.

He said there is no way Ghana can rake in more revenue and cut back on importation of foreign goods if the quality of local goods does not conform to international markets.

Mr. Ahenkorah who said this at the opening of a two day national quality policy workshop in Accra therefore tasked stakeholders in quality and manufacturing industries develop a draft policy which when passed into law will regulate the industry and products manufactured in Ghana competitive on the international market.

The Acting Executive Director of Ghana Standards Authority, Professor Alex Dodoo, who explained the importance of the National Quality Policy, said the policy when well developed and properly implemented will help the country cut down on the importation of goods as the current regime is negatively having an impact on the cedi.

The workshop which ends later this afternoon is expected touch on areas such as standardisation, metrology, conformity assessment and accreditation.
