WORKERS DAY CELEBRATIONS

MAY DAY CELEBRATION: Improving the Welfare of Farmers in Ghana.

On this May day set aside to celebrate workers, The Ghana Chamber of Agribusiness want to say Áyeekoo’ to our gallant farmers that have continued to feed the nation despite the challenges that persist in the agriculture sector.

The Chamber wishes to commend Government of Ghana for the bold initiative on to boost agricultural productivity in Ghana under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.

The Chamber believes that this "STOPPED GAP CAMPAIGN" will help increase the country's food security and thereby making food affordable.

Whilst commending government, the Chamber wishes to draw the attention of Government of Ghana on some areas of concern worth considering.

As we focus on the welfare of workers in Ghana, the Chamber is of the view that, the welfare of farmers need to be prioritized for serving the nation all these years.

We recommend that government considers registering farmers unto the SSNIT pension scheme to provide some security for these category of farmers this will go a long way to boost the smaller holder agribusiness engagement.

The Chamber sees it imperative that the state focuses on a full rollout of the agriculture insurance program to insulate the farmer from harsh weather and economic conditions.

The Chamber recommends to the Government to make known its strategy or business model for implementing the Planting for Food and Jobs programme to ensure full participation of the private sector and key partners.

The Chamber therefore ask the government to define the target beneficiaries and the sustainability plans to ensure intended beneficiaries are served with interventions with long lasting positive impact.

As requested by our Queen mothers and groundnut farmers, the state should revise the criteria for crop selection and minimum requirements needed for participation as it favours only men who largely own lands.

Finally, the government should develop a tracking and a biometric card device at check points in collaboration with the Telcos to minimize the collection of ‘unapproved fees’ by state intuitions.

The Ghana Chamber of Agribusiness Executives employs the government to make conscious efforts towards drafting a national policy.

This policy must seek to identify holistic promotion of smaller holder agribusinesses in Ghana.

Finally its undeniable fact that every nation requires clear sustainable national policy which drives its sustainable development programs and its in this vain that we employ the government to look at NATIONAL POLICY ON AGRIBUSINESS IN GHANA.

The Chamber believes that a National Agribusiness Policy will to a large extent help to elevate the major challenges facing the agriculture and agribusiness sector in Ghana.

On this note we wish all hard working farmers and all auxiliary players within the agriculture value chain *HAPPY HAPPY WORKERS DAY CELEBRATION*
