It costs more to truck a container 10 miles in Ghana than sending the container from Europe to Ghana..
So if they do manage to build a factory for every 10 miles they get away from Tema/Accra the price of the product is going to increase.
The factory will only work half the time due to Electricity or Water shortages.
So the price will be double the cost of the same item made abroad.
A 1€ item from Europe will cost 10€ when made in Ghana.

To begin with we should use government's purchasing power to keep these industries going till they level up. If all state institutions especially schools are instructed to get sugar from Komenda, use only local rice, use only local textile for school uniforms etc, these local industries will do well. But left on their own will be difficult in the face of cheaper imports. Whatever it is let's love our own small.

Factory would be a success if amongst others he following are met...
1. The product should be of the highest quality
2. Govt. should use tax incentives (in short run) to lower costs of production to ensure competitiveness (...do not subsidize directly)
3. Good management required for effectiveness and efficiency - including sustained output

No policy to protect industries in place. Just like the textile industry......cheap imports from China.

This is what people who understand economics're telling the NDC GOVERNMENT to reduce high taxes on utilities and also control inflation and the ex change rates for our currency. These measures will go a long way to create enabling industrial environment for our local industries to be able to produce at collectively cheap & sell at cheap price. That is exactly what countries like CHANA MALAYSIA and the rest did.
