Ghanaian Youth challenged to acquire skills

A business development advisor has appealed to the youth to acquire technical and vocational skills to make a decent living.

Mr Charles Cobbina, SOS-Ghana's Business Development Advisor, said such skills could turn any life around.

Mr Cobbina was speaking at the second graduation of 38 youth who were trained in several vocations under the SOS Children's Villages-Ghana, Family Strengthening Programme (FSP).

He said it was not true that there were no job opportunities in the country leading to some youth engaging in immoral and illegal activities.

According to him, technical and vocational skills would empower the youth to produce products for the market and earn some money.

He also appealed to stakeholders especially the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and parents to put in a policy for the young to acquire at least a vocational or technical skill by age 18 years.

Mr Cobbina, who chaired the graduation ceremony, appealed to the graduates not to only produce for the Ashaiman market but also the whole country and beyond by using social media platforms.

Mrs Diana Ofori-Addo Fiati, FSP Coordinator, said SOS-Ghana extended its Family Support Programme to Ashaiman in 2011.

Mrs Ofori-Addo Fiati said the programme which was aimed at identifying and supporting the youth to acquire the needed skills has so far trained 115 people in Ashaiman.

She said they had training in shoe making, catering, sewing, embroidery, nail beautification, hairdressing, mobile phone repair and electrical.
