E-zwich transactions yield GH¢105m

E-zwich transactions for the first half of the year yielded 105.3 million Ghana Cedis.

This is far higher than the amount yielded in the same period last year.

As many as about 527,218 transactions took place during the year under review. Presently, 853,387 Ghanaians are using the e-zwich card.

Mary Dei Sarpong is the Head of Business Development at GhIPSS, Managers of the e-zwich, and says things are looking good, adding, “by the end of the year, you should see significant change in the uptake”.

The biometric registration system was introduced in 2007 purposely to attract the ‘unbanked’ and the ‘underbanked’ sector of the population.

The e-zwich payment system is an innovative method of improving accessibility to banking and retail services in Ghana. It offers deposit taking financial institutions, including universal banks, rural banks and savings and Loans, a platform that enables them to interoperate.

As many as 25 banks are presently connected to the e-zwich platform.
