Kotoka International Airport Flooded

The arrival hall of the Kotoka International Airport in Accra was like a mini swimming pool on Saturday as the whole place was flooded by the Saturday evening rain that hit some parts of the capital.

Arriving passengers and their waiting relations could not believe their eyes when leakages during the evening downpour rendered the arrival hall of the country’s premier airport unusable.

Even before the soggy state of the arrival hall sent people seeking cover, the authorities at the place were compelled by the embarrassing circumstances to direct arriving passengers to the departure hall, when waiting relatives were not aware of the change of plan.

According to sources at the facility, KIA has been experiencing leakages for the past six months making staff to use bowls to collect water from the leaking roofs, just after the CEPS check point.

On Saturday, the disaster which had been waiting to happen embarrassed arriving passengers and workers at the airport.

Workers at the facility were quickly mustered to mop the place to the amazement of bystanders who could be heard mumbling about the degeneration of the country’s premier airport.

A man who was there to welcome his wife remarked bitterly “what is happening here? I cannot believe my eyes.”

KIA in recent times has been in the news for the wrong reasons.

There is decadence at the airport with constant break down of scanners at the point of departure, making passengers to travel un-scanned.

The conveyer belt had also suffered its fair share of the rot as it also breaks down intermittently. Power outages have become the order of the day as the airport suffers black outs spanning hours with no solution in sight.

Attempts to speak to the authorities were unsuccessful.
