Peasant farmers call on G8 to back action to words

The President of the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana, Mohammed Adam Nashiru says concerns of Small Scale producers in Ghana is the intention of G8 leaders to launch a New Alliance to increase Food and Nutrition Security at their Summit in the US.

He said the farmers see this new alliance as a diversionary tactic to cover up for the failure of G8 leaders to deliver on their previous promise to poor countries that had good plans for their agriculture sectors.

Mr Adam Nashiru said three years ago, President Obama rallied the G8 in L'Aquila in Italy to support poor countries to grow more and earn more.

The initiative included a $ 22b financial investment pledge to these countries.

Mr Adam Nashiru noted that the initiative ended in December last year and yet half of their pledge has not been met.

“We need serious support…three years back in L’Aquila some pledges were made and we didn’t see the impacts of these pledges, and so this time around in camp David they should put their words into action so that agriculture will be a place to be in Africa.” He said.
