TraffiTech-GH: Concerned Drivers Association accuses MTTD of 'digital extortion'

The Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, David Agboado, has accused the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of engaging in “digital extortion” through its enforcement of traffic regulations with the TraffiTech-GH system.

He argues that authorities must first address road and traffic-management deficiencies, including faulty traffic lights and the occupation of bus stops by traders, before intensifying enforcement against motorists.

Speaking on the Classy Morning Show with DJ Slim, Agboado questioned why the MTTD was focusing on speeding when TraffiTech-GH was also intended to address indiscriminate parking and running red lights.

“They are only using one aspect of it and the law must not be ‘pick and choose’,” he said.

“They should go all out,” he added, insisting that the department must be consistent in how it applies the system.

He described the MTTD's focus on speeding as “laughable” and said its approach amounted to a modernised form of extortion.

“They are migrating from physical to extortion to digital extortion,” he said.

Agboado acknowledged that motorists captured for speeding by TraffiTech-GH had committed offences. However, he insisted that the authorities must put measures in place to ensure that drivers are not unfairly penalised because of deficiencies in the road and traffic-management system.

He cited a traffic light at Neoplan in Achimota which, according to him, does not display an amber signal when changing from green to red.

“Meanwhile, when you pass through that, the camera will capture you,” he said.

He also complained that traders had taken over bus stops, leaving drivers with limited space to stop or park properly. He questioned why motorists should face arrest or be captured by the system for parking offences when authorities had allowed such obstructions to persist.

“If this is the case, why are they saying it's only overspeeding they are checking?” he asked.
