Ghana and Canada have agreed to strengthen cooperation in aviation, trade, railway development and defence as part of efforts to expand economic opportunities and deepen bilateral relations.

The agreement follows an official visit to Canada by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, at the invitation of his Canadian counterpart, Anita Anand.

During the visit, the two ministers signed a Letter of Intent in Ottawa, outlining key areas for cooperation between the two countries.

The proposed areas of collaboration include aviation, railway development, education, agriculture, mining, renewable energy, artificial intelligence and trade. The countries also plan to begin discussions on a possible defence agreement.

Ablakwa said Ghana and Canada were exploring ways to create more job opportunities for Ghanaians in Canada and expand scholarship opportunities for Ghanaian students.

He explained that the agreement would strengthen bilateral relations under President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda and Canada’s efforts to deepen its engagement with Africa.

The two countries also agreed to cooperate on security challenges in Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, where attacks by armed groups remain a major concern.

The discussions further covered support for people affected by the conflict in Sudan and the ongoing crisis in Haiti. Other issues included reform of the United Nations and efforts to address climate change.

Ablakwa noted that Ghana and Canada had maintained strong relations for decades, dating back to the arrival of missionaries from Québec in Navrongo about 120 years ago.

He expressed confidence that the latest agreement would create new opportunities for cooperation and strengthen ties between the two countries.
