The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, has called on member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen electricity trade across the sub-region to improve energy security and support economic growth.

Speaking at the 16th Meeting of ECOWAS Ministers in Charge of Energy on October 22, 2026, Dr Jinapor said stronger cooperation among member states was essential to making energy more affordable, accessible and sustainable.

He stressed the need for countries in the sub-region to work together to strengthen their energy systems and facilitate the cross-border movement of electricity.

“A more energy-secure West Africa is a stronger, more integrated, and more prosperous West Africa,” he said.

Dr Jinapor urged his counterparts to take practical steps to expand regional electricity trade, noting that closer cooperation could enable countries to make better use of available energy resources and advance regional integration.

The meeting comes at a time when reliable and affordable electricity remains critical to businesses, industries and households across West Africa.

Stronger regional electricity trade could help countries address supply gaps by enabling those with available power to supply others facing shortages. It could also improve the utilisation of existing energy infrastructure and support economic activities across national borders.

Dr Jinapor said the engagement provided an opportunity for member states to discuss shared energy priorities and strengthen cooperation towards a more integrated and sustainable regional energy sector.
