Ghana and Panama have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formally begin bilateral political consultations between the two countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the development in a Facebook post on Monday, September 21, 2026, saying the agreement was signed on the sidelines of the ongoing 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

According to Ablakwa, he signed the MoU with Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Javier Eduardo Martínez-Acha Vásquez.

He said the agreement seeks to deepen and structure cooperation between Ghana and Panama, particularly in maritime affairs, cocoa production, trade and technical assistance in the extractive sector.

The minister said the two sides also used the occasion to reconcile following Ghana’s Black Stars victory over Panama at the just-ended 2026 World Cup.

“On a lighter note, we took the opportunity to reconcile after our Black Stars defeated Panama at the just ended World Cup,” he said.

The agreement forms part of Ghana’s diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Ghana’s delegation is currently participating in the 81st session of the General Assembly, with the country pursuing bilateral and multilateral engagements.
